Debris flows in the Seeley burn scar area of Huntington Canyon have forced the closure of SR31 from the Crandall Canyon Junction (MP33) to the Miller’s Flat Junction (MP18). The area received a substantial amount of rainfall on September 2 resulting in debris flows coming out of several side canyons.

UDOT is working on reopening SR31, but it could take several days until their work is complete.

In addition to the large amount of debris on the roadway, the shoulder of the road has been damaged in several places. A debris flow at Mill Canyon has filled the Huntington Creek channel and the water is now running along the side of the road.
В
This is the third time since the Seeley Fire in late June and early July that SR31 has been closed for a significant amount of time. The closure has a great impact on the workers that travel the canyon daily for work at the Huntington Power Plant, coal mines and construction sites. The debris flows into Huntington Creek compromise the quality of the water entering the power plant and irrigation systems. It is anticipated that this will be an ongoing occurrence for the next few years during rain events, spring runoff and possible avalanches in the winter.
