At the Helper City Council Meeting on Thursday, a couple of key items were at the center of discussion.

Roger Metzger led the discussion for an approval on a Sub For Santa event. He gave background information on Sub For Santa, speaking about how yard sales, raffles, auctions and other such events have been held to raise money to support the project in years before. In the past, Sub for Santa has helped as many as 35 children and 14 families to have a good Christmas.

The request in question is for the Rio Theater to be used for a one-man showing of “A Christmas Carol.” All money generated goes directly to the families helped and no administrative fees are kept. The council approved to event as long as scheduling worked in everyone’s favor.

Also discussed at the meeting was the work that has been done on some streets of Helper by Knife River. Currently, a sewer line is being installed from Railroad Avenue all the way to D Street, and a storm drain is also going to be added on those streets. Preparations will be made so that paving will be done before it stops work for the winter. After winter, work will resume for more improvements.
