The October Helper City Council meeting began in a special way, with a moment of silence after the Pledge of Allegiance to honor those that fell victim during the Las Vegas shooting.

Kathleen Royster then represented the Helper Project and spoke with council members to inform them of various projects that are upcoming and projects that the group has completed in the past. She handed out a catalogue to each council member of their recent exhibition, “The Nest.”

Royster then began with background information, stating that she is a board member with the Helper Project, a 501C3 non-profit, non-political organization that was founded in 2016 by Anne and Roy Jespersen. After the introduction, she informed the council and listening crowd that the organization has completed several projects in the city, such as the Cal Ripken baseball field in Helper, “The Nest,” the Outlaw Car Show and purchasing new trash cans for Main Street.

Some upcoming goals for the group is to install an ATM on Main Street, to create a community theatre and to bring the Salt Lake Youth Orchestra to the area.

Michele Goldsmith then approached the council members to ask for a signature from Mayor Ed Chavez in order to complete the preparations for the 3rd annual Witches Night Out, which will take place this year on Oct. 27. Organizers of the event have obtained a single event alcohol permit to allow wine, beer and possible mixed drinks during the festivities.

This was approved and signed by the mayor.
