Two in Custody After Scofield Burglary Spree

Press Relase

On the morning of May 7, 2016, Carbon County Deputies were dispatched to the Bolotus Subdivision in Scofield, Utah, on a burglary complaint.  Upon their arrival, Deputies met with a property owner who advised that his cabin had been burglarized and several items were missing.  The property owner was able to locate a vehicle in the subdivision which had his property inside of it.  Prior to Deputies arriving, property owners from the subdivision surrounded a cabin and were able to make contact with several juveniles inside the residence.

When Deputies Jonathan Mangum and William Marinoni arrived at the scene, they made contact with the property owners and two male juveniles.  During the investigation, the juveniles admitted to using a pry bar to gain access into at least five different cabins, where they took items such as electronics, alcohol and hunting equipment.  The juveniles were not exactly sure of which cabins they entered during the early morning of the burglaries.

The juveniles were originally in the area staying at a friend’s grandfather’s cabin with several other juveniles when they decided to commit the burglaries.  Deputies Mangum and Marinoni were able to identify several other cabins that had been entered by force prior to leaving the area and attempted to contact all cabin owners involved.

It should be known that both juveniles were from the Salt Lake area and were booked into the Carbon County Youth Detention Center on the following charges: Burglary (76-6-202) a Second Degree Felony, due to forcibly entering a dwelling with the intent of committing theft, Criminal Mischief (76-6-106) a Second Degree Felony, due to the total estimated damage to the cabins being approximately $6000.00, and Theft (76-6-404) a Third Degree Felony, due to the estimated value of the stolen items being over $2500.00.

At this time, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has two Detectives in the Scofield area checking cabins for damage to doors and windows and would urge all property owners in the area to check their cabins for any damage or missing property.
