The Utah State University Eastern spirit squad traveled to Anaheim, Calif. over the weekend where the Eagles competed in the United Spirit Association College Championships.

The spirit squad consists of USUE’s cheer and dance teams. Both teams competed in the two-day event along with Emmett the Eagle, who joined the competition as the mascot competed for top honor in its own category.

Following two days of competition, including a preliminary round on Saturday and the final round on Sunday, the USU Eastern dance team was named the national champion. The team took first in hip hop and second in open dance at the national championship. The Eagles earned the title against other two-year institutions.

Emmett the Eagle also found success against four-year colleges and universities, as he performed a two-minute skit for judges. Emmett brought home a second-place finish from the competition.

The cheer squad also did well at the event, competing in the two-year small co-ed show category.

The trip to Anaheim to compete at nationals was the first time in over 15 years that the cheer team participated in the event. It has been even longer since the dance team has competed in a similar event.
