USU Eastern Students recently competed at the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) that took place in Louisville, Ky. and represented the school and area well. SkillsUSA has 361,000 members nationwide and the NLSC now consists of 102 individual competitions. Chloe Wilson placed 10th overall in Job Skill Demonstration A, demonstrating her ability to use her blueprint reading skills to construct a designed object to specifications.
Wilson’s competition was stated to be quite fierce, scoring 93% overall. Wilson was also elected President of the Utah Skills USA’s post-secondary division. Student Jordan Wynn took fourth place overall in the welding competition and will immediately continue training for the US Open Weld Trials. There, Wynn will be competing against other top welders in the country. This competition will determine Team USA’s welding competitor at WorldSkills 2019, which will take place in Kazan, Russia.
A team comprised of USU students including Tosh Davis, Ben Warnick and Davis Thompson earned the first place title in the welding fabrication competition. USU-E has medaled in this particular competition eight times since the beginning of the contest in 2008. It has been stated that the competition was especially challenging this year due to a new committee chair that made substantial changes to the overall structure.
With that in mind, the competitors and teams worked their hardest and showed up well prepared for the competition. A representative of the university stated that these students are extraordinary examples of the community, the institution, the state of Utah and the value of vocational education.
