With activities from fan appreciation night in full swing, the USU Eastern Lady Eagles gave the crowd something to cheer about with an 88-80 win in overtime Thursday evening. They beat the 10th ranked North Idaho College Cardinals in front of an enthusiastic home crowd to open Scenic West Athletic Conference play. On Saturday they were edged out in a 77-73 loss to 6th ranked Southern Idaho.
Eastern led Thursday night with its fast paced run and shoot offense. But late in the fourth, NIC came back from 10 points down to tie it up as the buzzer sounded. Eastern opened the overtime period a bit shaky, but midway through found its rhythm again and ran away with the win.
Jamie Smith led scores with 16, Caroline Fishers added 13 and Larissa Quintana put up 12 for the Lady Eagles. Leila Hadzialijaqie grabbed 10 rebounds.
In the Saturday loss to CSI Isabel Costa had a double double with 12 rebounds and 10 points. Bryanna Adams led the scoring for the Eagles with 16 and Quintana added 13.
Coach Dave Paur said after the NIC game that there were still too many turnovers and missed shots, but they will be working hard at improving on that..
