Author Allan Kent Powell presents to Emery County Historical Society

Author and historian Allan Kent Powell was introduced by Vice Chairman Bernice Payne to a crowd of Emery County Historical Society members on Thursday evening. Powell is considered the state’s foremost expert on the German Prisoners of War (POWs) in Utah.
Following two original musical numbers performed by Jeannie Baggs, Powell presented a slideshow telling of the German Prisoners of War (POW) in Utah. The slideshow depicted the interaction of the POWs with local residents. It also described an incident at the Salina Camp in 1945, which was headlined in the Salt Lake Tribune as “Utah Camp Guard Kills 8 Nazis.” Powell has also written a book about these happenings entitled “Splinters of a Nation.”
The monthly gathering was hosted at the Emery County Administration Building on Main Street in Castle Dale. The evening’s presentation was followed by a trip to on Friday to Salina visiting the CCC/POW Camp Salina Museum, Salina Hospital and Miss Mary’s Historical Museum.
