Emery’s Dillon Wilstead and Carbon’s Cole Fossat combined to score 60 points to lead their respective schools in Emery’s 75-67 win Friday night against its longtime rival.

The 142 combined points scored were the most in a Carbon/Emery game since they hooked up to score 148 on Jan. 8, 2011.

Carbon jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead after five minutes of play. The lead would expand to 10, 15-5, after back-to-back three pointers from Fossat and Gage Daugherty. Emery ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to get within three, 17-14.

The Spartans kept the momentum going in the second with a 9-4 run to grab a 26-18 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Both teams would trade buckets until Emery would get a basket from Koby Butler and a three pointer by Bowdie Jacobson at the halftime buzzer to enter the break with its largest lead of the game, 41-29. The 27 points scored by the Spartans in the quarter was the second highest output in a single quarter this season.

The Spartans extended their lead to 51-37 five minutes into the third quarter, but a 16-4 spurt spanning the third and fourth quarters got the Dinos within two, 55-53, with just under five minutes to play in the game.

Clutch free throw shooting and timely buckets by Emery in the final moments of the game kept Carbon’s comeback hopes at bay.

The 32 points scored by Fossat was a career-best. His six three pointers were also the most he has nailed in a single game. Peyton Fausett was next up for Carbon with 17 points. Garrett Blanc was the other Dino in double figures with 10.

Wilstead’s 28 were a season-high. Jacobson, just a sophomore, notched a career-best 17, including four threes. Butler finished with 10 on the night.

With the win, Emery improved its record to 7-5. Carbon slipped to .500 on the season at 7-7.

Emery will begin Region 15 action next Friday at home against San Juan. Carbon will host North Sanpete on Wednesday to begin their Region 12 season. Both games will be broadcast live on ETV Channel 10 at 7 p.m.
