Gentry Christiansen, Addy Guymon and Sky Guymon competed at the Great Southwest Track Classic held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on June 7- 8. The girls are members of the Emery High School Track and Field team and were invited to compete on Team Utah. The meet features top athletes around the country representing their home state.

On June 7, Sky Guymon competed in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, a four-teammate run in 100m Hurdles in a back-and-forth fashion. Team Utah finished in fifth place behind teams Texas A, Arizona, Nevada and Texas B. Addy Guymon competed in the 2000 Steeple Chase and placed in second, earning Team Utah eight overall points. The event was a five-lap race where runners must jump over four solid wood barriers and one water obstacle during each lap. In her first time running the event, Addy finished with a time of 7:20.24. Gentry Christiansen competed in the 4×800 meter relay with Team Utah’s A Team. Team Utah A would end up finishing in first-place in the event, with Team Utah B placing second and New Mexico in third.

Moving onto the second day of the event, Sky Guymon once again would compete in the 100m Hurdles, this time in the open race. With the temperatures reaching 98 degrees, she would finish with a time of 15.53, placing 25 overall in a stacked field of athletes. She would have the fourth fastest time for a freshman in the event.

Christiansen and Addy Guymon competed in the 3200m race Saturday evening. The two have become affectionately known as the “Emery Duo”, ran a very smart race in the blistering New Mexico heat. The duo was patient in the first 1600m, letting the other runners dictate the pace as they waited to make their move. With the last 1600m remaining, they would end up taking the lead, running side by side and gapping the field. The Emery Duo raced the last 400m finishing first and second place in the event. Gentry finished with a time of 11:13.38 and Addy finished at 11:15.55.

The meet concluded with the Mixed 4×400 Meter Relay. The race consists of two boys and two girls each covering one lap of the track. Utah had three teams compete, the Emery Duo teamed up with a couple runners from Morgan High School. One of the runners being the cousin of the Guymon girls, Maverick Guymon. The team (Utah C) finished in the fourth-place spot overall, behind Utah B, Texas and Utah A.

Team Utah had an excellent meet with the boys team placing second overall with 200 points, just behind the tough Texas team, finishing with 240 points. On the girls’ side, Team Utah finished number three overall with 210 points, behind Texas (220) and Arizona (241.5). The Emery High School runners represented Emery with class and they are very appreciative of those who have supported them this season. They would like to thank their parents and coaches. Giving a special; thanks to Chris and Courtnee Justice and Jordan and Amanda Leonard for their generosity.
