After the 57th presidential election, facing the fiscal cliff, and the end of the world postponed, some may say 2012 is a year not to be forgotten in the history books. Let’s take a look at 2012 in review from ETV 10 news in Carbon and Emery County:

Life Saving Price City Police Officer Honored

A Price City Police Officer was presented with a Meritorious Life Saving Award at the Price City Council meeting Wednesday evening.Officer Ed Malmgren received the award for his actions during a response to an alleged overdose on Nov. 7. According to a commendation letter read by Price City Police Chief Aleck Shilaos, Malmgren responded to a call in North Price and was directed to an unresponsive 19-year-old female. Malmgren was able to help clear the woman’s airway during resuscitation efforts.The letter said, “Without the assistance she received from Officer Malmgren she would have easily died.” Councilman Jeanne McEvoy said, “I think we need to take the time to thank our Officers for what they do for us.”

“The actions [Malmgren] performed in this dire situation are commendable,” Shilaos said. “[Malmgren] upheld the standards that embrace the Price City Police Department.”

Price City Mayor Joe Piccolo congratulated Malmgren and praised local law enforcement officers from local agencies for the protection and service they provide.

Bodies Found Outside Vehicle, Authorities Say *Update*

New information has beenВ receivedВ surrounding the accident that allegedly claimed the lives of two Colorado men working in Nine Mile Canyon.В Brian Axe and Mark Widegren had been working on a natural gas pipeline in the canyon. According to Carbon County Sheriff’s Lt. Tom Stefanoff, the bodies were found outside of the vehicle, “but stayed within a good distance of the vehicle,” approximately 800 feet below the road on which the Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Department is unsure as to what made the men deviate from the line of traffic. The Utah Highway Patrol will be helping them conduct a road investigation.

A 6-year-old girl was life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital Tuesday evening after being struck by a car while trying to cross Highway 10 in Price.The accident occurred at 5:23 p.m. in the southbound lane. Emery Animal Control saved two stuck kittens from a storm drain in Castle Dale Tuesday evening after a call from four local girls. The girls found the vocal kittens as they rode their bikes passed the drain.В Upon finding the kittens in their ordeal, the girls placed a phone call to local authorities who then dispatched Emery Animal Control to the scene.

Dr. Timothy Riley has arrived in Price to take over the Curator ofВ Archaeology position at the Prehistoric Museum, and can’t wait to get started.В “I’m hoping to get the public engaged by changing some of the exhibits,” he said to an etv10news.com reporter. “Hopefully this will take place in the fall. ” Dr. Riley comes to the museum from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, where he was an adjunct professor in the Department of Anthropology. Dr. Riley received his Ph.D for his work on the diet of ancient Native Americans who lived in Hinds Cave along the Pecos River, according to a press release from USU Eastern.

Police reported to a shots fired call in the neighborhood of 650 N. and 200 E. in Price, Tuesday evening. Captain Bill Barnes with the Price City Police, said his department was dispatched to the scene around 6:15 p.m. Ten neighbors, and an on-duty USU-Eastern campus officer all confirmed they had heard numerous shots fired from theВ a foreВ mentioned residence. Police acted quickly,surrounding the home and В blocking off the neighborhood, advising all residents to stay inside and away from their windows. Missing Hunter’s Body Recovered

On October 8, 2012 at 6:45p.m. Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk received a phone call regarding an overdue hunter. The caller stated that the hunter, Ken Moosman had not been heard from since Saturday.Sheriff Funk as well as several members of the Emery County Search and Rescue responded to the Shoefly Canyon in Upper Joe’s Valley. Sheriff Funk also requested the help of the Department of Public Safety helicopter to fly over the area. Emery County & Sanpete County search and rescue covered the area on foot. The Emery County Search and rescue located the hunter’s horse with his gun attatched to the saddle. Unfortunately Mr. Moosman was found deceased not far from where his horse was located on October 9. Orangeville Mayor, Patrick Jones, was made aware of a disturbing prank regarding a display in a resident’s front yard Friday night. Over the weekend in the yard of Greg Huntington, was a display with a dummy depicting Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, sitting in a chair under a tree, holding a rope that had been strung over a branch. On the opposite end of the rope was another dummy depicting President Barack Obama hanging from a noose.

Two Price residents were formally charged in 7th District Court yesterday with over 15 counts of sexually abusing a child.В Amanda Nicole Romano (26) was charged with five counts object rape of a child, five counts sodomy on a child, one count child abuse involving physical injury, and four counts aggravated sexual abuse of a child. Timothy Lee Romano (25) was charged with two counts aggravated sexual abuse of a child. Timothy, and Amanda were both arrested on November 9.

Suspects Arrested in Connection with Stewarts Market Burglary

After a two month investigation, three suspects have been linked with the burglary of Stewart’s Market in October. On October 9, Emery County Sheriff Detective Garrett Conover was called to investigate a burglary and theft at the grocery store in Castle Dale. Employees which entered the building that morning noticed the door unlocked. Upon further investigation, the employees found the safe had been wiped clean. After an inventory of goods was taken, and further investigation of the scene was conducted, it was discovered that cash, stamps, and 16 cartons of cigarettes had been stolen. The grand total of stolen items amounted to $13,991.82.

Governor Gary Herbert announced on Thursday afternoon that he has appointed Carbon County native Robert Pero to serve on the Utah State Tax Commission.В Just short of 20 years ago, Robert Pero was appointed to the position of County Clerk/Auditor by the Carbon County Commission following the death of Norm Prichard, who had previously filled the position. If the Utah State Senate approves Governor Gary Herbert’s pick of Pero to the State Tax Commission, the next County Clerk Auditor will also be appointed by the County Commission. Pero will wait to resign his current post as Carbon County Clerk/Auditor until his confirmation by the Utah State Senate.

New details have been released involving the tragic murder-suicide thatВ occurred in Helper on Sunday.В At 12:46p.m. authorities were dispatched to a call of В shots fired at the address of 118 Bryner street. When police arrived on scene they heard gunfire from behind the house.В Officers on scene found two deceased male subjects outside in what appeared to be a murder-suicide. В Several children were in the home at the time but were unharmed.

UHP Helicopter Rescues Stranded Rafter from Frozen Green River

A Montana man was rescued from frozen waters of the Three Canyons area on the Green River, and returned home safely on Thursday. On Wednesday the Emery County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Ross Miller of Missoula, Montana. Miller said his son Blake Miller was rafting down the Green River, and he was tracking him with a DeLorme inReach GPS Tracker. Miller said Blake had launched his raft on December 16, and was planning to float to Hite Marina at Lake Powell. Blake had been asked to check in with his inReach every morning and night so his father could know his condition and his whereabouts.When Miller called on Wednesday he reported Blake had been checking in at the same location on the Green River since December 19, and although he had been checking in every  morning and night, he would like authorities to check his condition and possibly get him off the river.
