Emery looks to be in the hunt for state basketball title again

Emery High boy’s Basketball is looking at a good year ahead with some solid returning players. Coach Todd Jeffs said that his core will be anchored by senior Baily Faimalo and junior Dillon Wilstead, Seniors Gavin McDermott, McKlane Allred and Drexler Tanner are also part of the experienced squad that will be hitting the hardwood.

Jeffs feels like the team will be in the hunt for both the region and state title this year. Team speed and depth are what is going to make this a team to contend with. Faimalo will be returning in the role of point guard and Jeffs said that will set the tone for a successful season. The team will be working hard to improve their defense and make sure it is as sharp as the offense.

Wasatch Academy will be the team that pushes the Spartans in region play. State wide South Summit and Beaver should be right on top with Emery. Jeffs thinks that the Spartans have all the tools they need to go all the way as long as they put them all together.

Speed and Athleticism should propel Lady Spartans success

The Lady Spartans may have a young team, but Coach Dean Stilson said they are experienced. There are only two seniors, but there are six juniors and 14 freshmen and sophomores who have seen court time.

Emery will not have a lot of height this season, but speed and athleticism are assets they plan to build on as team strengths. Stilson said even his taller post players have good speed. He will focus on improving defense to hold down the scoring from their opponents this season.

Stilson says the team fits great in the region and it might be a three-way battle between Emery, North Sevier and South Sevier for region title. San Juan is somewhat of a wild card as Stilson is not sure if some of the players will come out for the team. On the state level the competition will be stiff with the likes of Beaver, Kanab, Delta and Enterprise.

“The girls this year are a really good group of athletes, good in the classroom and represent Emery well,” said Stilson, “I think we have a good opportunity to do very well this season.”
