Governor Gary R. Herbert named Brad Barber to the Governor’s Council on Balanced Resources. The Council brings together diverse leaders from the public and private sectors to resolve challenging environmental, natural resource and public lands issues. The Council is action-oriented, dedicated to collaborating to achieve practical results.
“Brad Barber’s innately balanced perspective on natural resources and related issues will serve the State well,” the Governor said. “Due to his extensive public sector experience, he both understands and appreciates competing viewpoints-one of those rare people who simultaneously sees the big picture while having a firm grasp on the details. Because he knows Utah and its people very well, I am confident he will bring the constructive approach to the Council to help us identify solutions that work.”
“It is an honor to be selected to this role by Governor Hebert and I will do my best to provide the appropriate balance to the Council,” Barber said. “I believe the council needs another strong voice for balanced conservation and I will try to provide that voice, while seeking progress on critical environmental, conservation and public lands issues. I will also strive for responsible, balanced and sustainable solutions.”
Barber was formerly the State Planning Coordinator and has recently worked with The Wilderness Society and The Nature Conservancy, as well as Envision Utah and Kennecott Land as a planning and research consultant. From 2002 to 2006, he was the senior fellow for environmental management at the Oquirrh Institute where he managed the Institute’s program for environmental and natural resources. Prior to that role, Barber worked under three Utah governors for twenty years in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, serving eight of those years as senior economist and director of demographic and economic analysis.
Dave Livermore, State Director for The Nature Conservancy, weighed in on the Governor’s decision. “Governor Herbert has made a great choice in Brad Barber. Brad knows the issues, knows the State and is the type of person able to reach a consensus by working with all sides. We applaud Brad’s appointment and know he will contribute very positively to the Balanced Resource Council.”
The Council on Balanced Resources is presently focused on projects which include the Iron County R.S. 2477 Pilot project, county lands bills, land exchanges and Three Creeks public lands grazing reform.
Barber is a life-long Utah resident.В He is married, with two children and eight grandchildren.В Brad spends much of his spare time traveling the West, whitewater rafting, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and skiing.
