Green River Nipped by Monument Valley, Girls Win *Photo Gallery*

The Green River Pirates suffered a tough loss on Friday night to the Monument Valley Cougars 43-41, dropping their Region 19 record to 0-3.

The Pirates held a 34-25 lead going into fourth before Monument Valley outscored Green River 18-7 in the final frame. Jacob Cox and Trey Vetere led the Pirates with 12 points apiece.

Green River (1-12, 0-3 Region 19) will travel to Whitehorse High School (0-2, 0-2 Region 19) on Friday.

The girls’ team improved their record to 2-1 in Region 19 and currently sit in second place. The Lady Pirates upended the Lady Cougars on Friday 51-44. Maribel Escalante hit a career-high six treys en route to a game-high 18 points. Escalante has hit the third most threes in the state (45), among all classifications. Presley Lovato pitched in 12 and Savannah Williams nearly tallied a double double with nine points and 10 boards.

The Lady Pirates (4-12, 2-1 Region 19) will host Pinnacle (1-12, 0-4 Region 19) on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast live on ETV Channel 6 at 6 p.m.
