Despite playing in the consolation bracket in the 2A Tournament, the Emery Lady Spartans showed why they were ranked in the top five in 2A most of the season, thumping South Sevier 53-41 Friday morning, earning a spot in the fifth place game on Saturday.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Emery exploded in the second as coach Lynne Tuttle subbed in five freshman who sparked at one point a 17-2 run. Megan Jensen, Bailey Huggard, Kinlee and Kacelyn Toomer and Morgan Hurdsman helped Emery to a 28-19 halftime score. The Spartans outscored the Lady Rams 18-6 in the quarter.
Another big quarter for Emery in third extended its lead and the team enjoyed its largest lead of the game, 48-26, at the 7:16 mark of the fourth after a bucket and made foul shot by Jensen. The super freshman led the Lady Spartans with 14 point and nine rebounds. Lainee Jensen added seven points and seniors Bayler Griffin and CJ Johnson each chipped in six. In all, 10 players notched points in the game.
Emery will await the winner of the 11:10 game between Millard and Enterprise for a Saturday morning matchup at 10 to determine the fifth place finisher.
