Third grade students from local elementary schools were recently given the opportunity to experience hands-on lessons about farms at a farm field day on Wednesday.
Sponsored by the Carbon County Farm Bureau Federation and put on by the Carbon Junior Livestock 4-H Club, the activity focused on teaching local youth about how vital farms and livestock are to the world in which we live.
“It’s to help the kids so they know where their food comes from,” explained Michelle Barker. “They think everything comes from the store.” Barker, who serves as the women’s chair for the Carbon County Farm Bureau as well as in the 4-H organization as a local leader, worked with her team to create a multitude of activities to help educate those in attendance.
Displays of chickens, a sheep, milk cow, pigs, goats and even bees were provided as well as lectures on topics such as ATV safety, how zinc plays an important role in brain activity and a discussion on how pizza travels from the farm to table.
“It was a big success,” Barker expressed in regards to the lessons learned and positive feedback she has received from teachers and parents about the students’ enjoyment. “They look forward to it every year.”
