After a slow first half, the Emery Spartans scored 20 points in the second as they picked up an important road win over the 4A Payson Lions on Friday.
After a scoreless first quarter, Emery answered Payson’s first touchdown in the second with one of its own on a Logan Cox three-yard run to tie the score going into halftime.
Cox and Kacey Jones then added a TD run apiece in the third quarter to give the Spartans the 19-7 lead heading into the final quarter. Tel Gardner found the endzone in the fourth to wrap up the scoring. Cox finished the game with 165 yards on just 20 carries with two touchdowns. Jones and Gardner each ran for 28 yards. Easton Gordon ran the ball eight times for 43 yards. Emery rushed the ball a total of 51 times for 306 yards.
Emery (1-1, 0-0 3A North) will host the Delta Rabbits (1-1, 0-0 3A South) on Friday for the team’s home opener. The game will be broadcast live on ETV Channel 10 at 7 p.m.
