“Everyone comes home for Peach Days,” “I wouldn’t miss it,” were comments from former residents and a comment from a lifelong resident of Ferron, ”Isn’t this fun? I get so excited!” personify what the traditional Ferron Peach Days festival means, which took place over the weekend.
Everything seemed to go without a hitch. Commendations to Ferron Mayor Trent Jackson, the city council and committee members who planned, organized and carried out the celebration.
Activities started out Friday evening with dinner in the park catered by Kent Wilson and company. Many attended and enjoyed the meal. Also starting at 6 p.m. was team roping in the arena. Over 100 teams participated in the event, lasting well into the evening. Winners of the buckle roping were Rodney Winn and McKoy Christiansen and winning the saddle roping was Brady Ramone with partner Louie Ivie. This event was hosted by Sinbad Roping. Halfway through the roping, the cowboys secured their horses and turned the lights out for the fireworks managed by the fire department.
Participants of all ages then met to run the Light Bright Fun Run, sponsored by the Emery High Drill Team. Children, teens and adults wrapped glow sticks around themselves and took to the streets of Ferron. Participants ran either the 5K, a mile or a 3K. Everyone had a great time and returned safely from their adventures across the Emery County town.
Saturday began early with breakfast at the park. Next, at 10 a.m., the annual parade came from West Mill Road to State Street. The streets again were lined with many onlookers. At 11 a.m., a memorial program honored Vietnam Veterans. Special guests included Utah Governor Gary Herbert, Senator David Hinkins and approximately 75 Vietnam Veterans.
For the rest of the afternoon, several free games and blowup toys were at the Mayor’s Park for children to enjoy. Horse racing, a long-time Peach Days tradition, took place at the race track. Eight races were filled with fun excitement featuring local horses and others from out of the area. A demolition derby, always a big crowd pleaser, concluded the activities.
