The Green River boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled on Friday in a faceoff against the Monument Valley Cougars, which ended in a loss for the Lady Pirates and a victory for the boys’ team.
The Lady Pirates started out trailing 14-4 at the end of the first. However, a hard-fought second ended closer with a final of 23-17. Green River exploded after halftime, taking the lead and ending the third with a five point lead, 36-31, after hitting a game-high 19 points.
Monument Valley dug deep, though, and took the victory back and ended it to the tune of 47-41.
The Pirates’ bout of action opened similarly with Green River falling behind 13 points at the end of the first, 26-13. Starting in the second, however, Green River took the lead and never let it go. Green River blew past the Cougars in the next three quarters, putting up 24 each time en route to an 85-73 overall victory.
Maribel Escalante led her team in scoring during Friday’s action, putting up 19 and sinking five threes. Savannah Williams was the fellow Lady Pirate in double figures, netting 12. Cecilia Trejo also landed a 3-point shot for the team.
Jacob Cox shined for the Pirates Friday night, managing a stellar 30 points and three 3-pointers with teammates Samuel Corrigan, Trey Vetere and Axel Anquiano making it into double figures and putting up 18, 16 and 11, respectively. Vetere also landed the team’s fourth three.
The Lady Pirates’ next chance at victory will come on Thursday against Monticello. The team will then continue on to Friday where it will travel, along with the boys, to Whitehorse.
