During a regularly scheduled Carbon County Commission meeting that took place on Sept. 20, the commissioners discussed the possibility of withdrawing from the Southeastern Utah District Health Department on the stance that they would meet and attempt to fix discussed issues.
During the Dec. 13 meeting, the commissioners revisited this issue, stating that it has been an interesting process negotiating with the other counties. Commissioner Jake Mellor stated that at the end of the fourth quarter, the discussions have been positive and productive.
He then asked the other commissioners if they felt comfortable with rescinding the withdrawal. If the decision to rescind was made, the next step would be to move forward with the MOU and strive to the new interlocal agreement in the spring of 2018.
The commissioners were also informed that if they were unsure of their decision at this time, they were able to table the item until the Dec. 20 meeting. Commissioner Mellor took some time to explain some of the agreements that were made by the counties, including the way that the board members would be chosen, bylaws that would be updated and more.
The commissioners made the decision to rescind the withdrawal and move forward with the other counties.
“I think it is in the benefit of the county to do so,” commissioner Casey Hopes stated.
The MOU will be on the Dec. 20 meeting agenda for final approval by the commissioners.
