Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Southeastern Region Fishing Report – May 31

ABAJO MOUNTAINS: (May 31) Conservation officer Dennis Shumway reports good fishing at almost all San Juan County waters. Pike fishing is excellent at Recapture Reservoir where gold spinners and lures are working best. Largemouth bass fishing has been good with tube jigs. Aquatics manager Justin Hart suggests using spinner baits and crankbaits during the bass spawning period. White or chartreuse will be more effective in colored water while darker colors will perform better in clear water. Shumway says that nightcrawlers and PowerBait have been the best all-around baits for trout fisheries in the county.

ACADEMY MILL RESERVOIR: (May 24) Access the reservoir by a snow machine only.

BENCHES POND: (May 31) Fishing was reported as fair to good over the weekend. Anglers who fished from the dam had the best success. We recommend using nightcrawlers and salmon eggs.

BLUE LAKE: (May 24) There is still snow on the road, which is blocking access.

BOULGER RESERVOIR: (May 31) The access road has dried up and the pond is ice free. The reservoir was recently stocked and fishing has been excellent for 10 to 12 inch rainbow trout. Try using nightcrawlers and PowerBait.

CARBON COUNTY COMMUNITY FISHING POND: (May 31) The pond was recently stocked and fishing is good with baits and lures. On June 8, the DWR and Carbon County Recreation will partner in offering a family fishing event from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. DWR will provide rods, reels, bait and instruction. Carbon Recreation will give away hot dogs and soft drinks to participants.

CLEVELAND RESERVOIR: (May 31) There was a lot of fishing pressure over the Memorial Day weekend between boats and shoreline anglers. Tom and Steve Ogden fished from kick boats and caught seven nice rainbows on size six beadhead woolly buggers and soft hackle flies.

DUCK FORK RESERVOIR: (May 31) The U.S. Forest Service access road still is not open.

ELECTRIC LAKE: (May 31) Although fishing success was better than Scofield, Sergeant Shirley still categorized the catch rate as slow.

FAIRVIEW LAKES: (May 24) Both of the lakes are ice-free. Road access has not been reported on lately, but some years snow drifts and mud can impede access until early June. The lake won’t be stocked until the hatchery truck driver is confident about the trip.

FERRON RESERVOIR: (May 31) The U.S. Forest Service access road remains closed to traffic.

GIGLIOTTI POND: (May 31) Fishing is good with a variety of baits and lures. Great pond to fish on June 8 for free fishing day.

GOOSEBERRY RESERVOIR: (May 31) The access road just opened and stocking will occur shortly. Over the weekend, fishing for carry-over fish was slow. Gooseberry Reservoir tributaries are closed to fishing until the second Saturday in July.

GRASSY LAKE: (May 31) This lake is now accessible and ice free. The lake was stocked just before Memorial Day and the catch rate was good.

HUNTINGTON CREEK: (May 31) The creek has been devoid of fish since the Seeley fire. Restocking will not occur this year.

HUNTINGTON NORTH RESERVOIR: (May 31) Aquatics biologist Calvin Black caught a 2.5 pound brown trout on May 29. He reported seeing other large trout in the reservoir. The catch rate, however, remains slow.

HUNTINGTON RESERVOIR: (May 31) This water, also known as Mammoth, has opened and may be fished from shore or a small boat. One party of anglers reported good fishing using nightcrawlers fished off the bottom.

JOES VALLEY RESERVOIR: (May 24) On May 18, Justin Hart fished with his sons from the west shoreline. Fishing was slow until they moved into Seeley Cove and fished near the mud line. They caught numerous splake, up to 20 inches in the cove. Hart fished using whole three to five inch chubs on minnow hooks with no weight. They didn’t catch big fish, but they couldn’t keep the small splake off the hooks. Hart said the bait was struck on almost every cast, and it rarely had a chance to settle to the bottom.

LA SAL MOUNTAINS: (May 24) The water level at Kens Lake is very low. There is an active emergency change that allows anglers to keep eight rainbow trout. Kens Lake will not be stocked this year because of the draw down of the lake. Hidden and Dons lakes have both been stocked with more than 800 10 inch rainbow trout each. Oowah and Warner Lake were stocked on May 21 with a load of eight inch rainbow trout.

LOWER FISH CREEK: (May 31) Bill Peters reported fishing three miles above the department of transportation shed last Sunday. In an hour’s time, he caught three fish. These included a two pound brown trout, an 18 inch brown trout and a two pound cutthroat. He used a number four Panther Martin in a rainbow pattern.

MILLER FLAT RESERVOIR: (May 24) The road from Cleveland Reservoir and Joes Miller Flat Reservoir is open, but the reservoir hasn’t been stocked yet.

MILLSITE RESERVOIR & STATE PARK: (May 24) Weeks of good fishing are tapering off. Try using traditional baits such as nightcrawlers, salmon eggs and PowerBait.

PETES HOLE: (May 31) This water was recently stocked and is now ice free. Fishing is good with traditional baits.

POTTERS PONDS: (May 31) The U.S. Forest Service access road remains closed.

RIGHT FORK OF HUNTINGTON CREEK: (May 31) The creek has been devoid of fish since the Seeley Fire. Stocking will not occur this year.

SCOFIELD RESERVOIR: (May 31) Sergeant Shirley indicated that of 150 fishermen checked by conservation officers, only 10 fish had been caught overall.

Conservation Officer J.D. Abbott recommends fishing off the bottom with chub meat. If that fails to produce fish, try a combination of a worm and PowerBait. Abbott suggests that boat anglers stay in shallow water and cast toward shore with a gold Jakes or silver Kastmaster. Anglers are reminded that tributaries are closed to fishing until the second weekend in July. Please see the Utah Fishing Guidebook for Scofield’s special regulations.

SOUP BOWL: (May 24) The access road is blocked by ice, snow and drifts. Soup Bowl won’t be stocked until the snow melts and the road dries.

WILLOW LAKE: (May 31) The access road is now open. Stocking will occur shortly.

WRIGLEY SPRINGS RESERVOIR: (May 31) Two anglers reported catching and releasing 100 fish during a two day fishing frenzy last weekend. They used nightcrawlers, PowerBait and marshmallows.
