USU Eastern Press Release
Utah State Eastern freshman Ashley Sweat has been named the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball player of the week.
Sweat earned the honor after a stellar performance in Rangely, helping her team get a four-game sweep over the Spartans. At the plate against CNCC, Sweat batted .786 with 11 hits, 10 runs, six doubles, two triples, eight RBIs and a home run.
Sweat said that receiving the honor makes her feel accomplished after dealing with a nagging injury for part of the season.
“It is really fulfilling because my wrist has been taking me out of the field and I have been only able to bat. I wanted to make the most out of what I can do,” said Sweat.
In the past few weeks, Sweat has been limited in practice due to her injury but the week leading up to the CNCC series, she was a full participant.
“It was my first week of full practice and going hard. I think that really helped with the outcome of my hitting this weekend,” said Sweat.
The Heber native is third on the team in batting average (.402) and second on the team in RBIs (27).
This is the second time this season that a USU Eastern softball player has received the SWAC Player of the Week honor. Cassidy Howe received the honor earlier this season.
With her injury almost in the rearview mirror, Sweat believes that the honor will help the rest of the season as her team contends for a Region XVIII title.
“This will fuel me to do better and I want to really succeed now,” said Sweat.
The Eagles will finish the final three weeks of the season at home in Price at the Carbon County Fairgrounds.
