Fourth and fifth grade students from Creekview Elementary spent their Friday night a little differently than they normally would. The young students enjoyed a fun night of reading books and participating in fun activities during the school’s fourth annual Stay Up and Read event.
Organized by Melanie Fausett, the fun night began with four Carbon High School baseball players reading to the kids. After reading, a game of dodgeball and red rover was played.
The new CHS sterling scholar students helped host the event. The scholars showcased and taught about their particular talent to the young students. Tyler Yokovich, science sterling scholar, taught and demonstrated three different science experiments. Next, Alyssa Vincent, music sterling scholar, and Sam King, math sterling scholar, were joined by two other CHS band students who lead a march around the gym. Creekview students were then able to take turns playing some of the instruments.
Shaubre Stockdale, FACS sterling scholar, helped students create a pattern that they were able to cut out and sew bibs that would be donated to a handful of residents at the local Parkdale Skilled Nursing Facility.
Trinalee Hatch then read the kids a story with a message that lead to an activity where the children wrote thank you notes or notes of appreciation to someone they care for. They were also able to decorate a treat to take to that person.
Aubrey Fausett, art sterling scholar, finished the nights activities by teaching and demonstrating an art technique that allowed the kids to create a unique art piece they could take home. Natalia Hopes, skilled and technical sterling scholar, was also a great volunteer who also shared her vocal talent by showcasing her voice/singing ability and allowed the kids to sing along.
“I have enjoyed planning and hosting this for the past four years now,” stated Fausett, “I have slowly learned that with the creativity and passion the high school students have, they can and did easily demonstrate to kids that learning and reading doesn’t have to be boring or quiet. They did learn and read, it was just in a way they didn’t expect.”
