Several Castle Country baseball teams competed on July 5 and 6 in Salt Lake City as they each looked to grab a state championship.
The 14U baseball team from Carbon County blew out Brighton 16-6 and then squeezed past East Side in extra innings, 5-4, to become the Utah state champions. The team will now continue onto Arroyo Grande, Calif. to participate in the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament.
Emery and Carbon 8U teams faced off in a thriller were Emery gained the edge to win 16-15 in a nail-biter. Taylorsville then beat Emery by one point. The Emery 8U team will now head to Long Beach, Calif. to play in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional Tournament. Emery was the Southern Utah state champions.
The 13U team from Carbon dominated Murray with a 17-3 victory and then beat Beaver 5-0. With the two wins, the team became Utah state champions in the 13U age group. The championship marks the sixth consecutive state title for the team. This team will host the upcoming Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament from July 22-27 in Carbon County. All of these games will be streamed online.
The Carbon 10U team was part of a close match but ultimately lost 2-1 to Taylorsville. Carbon 8U had another tough loss when it fell to Grantsville 19-14.
On Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. at the Castle Dale Fairgrounds, Emery 8U is hosting a cornhole tournament and raffle to help get the team to California. Those wishing to participate can call Rob Smith at (208) 851-2511.
