Home Depot gives a grant each year to a veteran that is 100% disabled in order to complete a home improvement project. The local DAV had submitted a veteran, husband of Judy Roybal, in 2019.

Though this project was chosen by Home Depot, it kept getting put off due to COVID-19. Roybal was happy to announce that the project, which consisted of the rebuilding and enclosure of the deck in their backyard, would finally begin on Thursday, Sept. 15.

“Because 35,000 of our own are veterans, The Home Depot Foundation understands the importance of honoring and serving those who have served us all,” the Home Depot’s website shared.

According to Home Depot’s website, over $400 million has been invested since 2011 in veteran causes. Moreover, there has been more than 50,000 veteran homes and facilities that have been improved through this grant assistance and volunteer work.

In 2018, the Home Depot Foundation pledged an additional $250 million to veteran causes. This will take the total commitment to half a billion by 2025. The Veteran’s Housing Grants Program, which was awarded to the Roybal family, was created to help nonprofits fund the development and repair of multi-unit veteran housing facilities.

The deck construction on the Roybal’s property was the first project that was completed by the Home Depot Foundation within Carbon and Emery counties. The only thing that was requested by the Roybal family following the submission of the grant application was a few volunteers to assist with the project.
