The Carbon High boys 1600 medley team broke a record during their home invitational on Saturday. Not only did the team cross the finish line first with a time of 3:36.38, but they broke a school record by 1.5 seconds. The record has stood since 1980.
The team is comprised of Kyle Quinton, Dallin Quinton, Kyle Barrett and Garrett Marsing. They make up the fastest 1600 medley team in Region 3A this year.
According to Carbon track coach Jimmy Jewkes, this race set the tone for the rest of the meet. Carbon performed well at its home invitational. The boys team finished seventh overall and the girls captured a second place overall finish out of 20 teams.
“This was an impressive finish for our teams,” Jewkes said. “To finish high in the standings against so many schools says a lot about our team.”
The Carbon boys 4×100 medley team continues to improve and finished in fifth place with a time of 46.08. Kyle and Cache Barrett, Braxton Jones and Dallin Quinton teamed up for the event and, according to Jewkes, continue to show improvement with each run.
Green River High and Pinnacle Academy also participated in the Carbon meet. Green River’s medley team finished in sixth place. Kyle Johnson, Jon Mendez, Tyrell Shumway, Joe Serafin and Ab Mendoza all run for the Pirate team.
In the high jump event, the Carbon boys continue to improve their distance. Sophomores Payton Fausett and Gabe Van Dyke placed eighth and ninth, respectively. They were followed by Mendez from Green River in tenth place.
In the boys field events, Corbin Mecham from Green River placed sixth in the shot put and Tyrell Shumway finished in second place in the javelin event.
Carbon did quite well in the girls division during Saturday’s meet. Several Lady Dinos turned in times and distances that qualified for state.
Zaharah Rossi kicked off the meet by running the 1600 meter race. The freshman placed sixth in the event. She then turned around and ran in the 800 medley, 800 open and finished the day running the 3200 meter event in which she placed second.
“She really impressed me,” Jewkes admitted. “By the end of the day, she had ran four miles competitively. Zaharah took on the hardest load of the team, but she never once complained.”
Carbon’s 4×100 girls medley team, comprised of Lindsey Blanc, Sarah Ohlwiler, Lexi Monson and Karina Ivory, captured a second place finish.
At the last minute, Jewkes explained that he made the decision for Monson, Blanc, Jordan Scoggins and Kira Tadehara to enter the 4×400 event. The decision proved successful as the team crossed the finish line in third place, edging out Stansbury for the overall second place finish at the meet.
Ohlwiler also placed second in the 100 meter hurdles followed by Scoggins in third place and Tay Johnson from Green River in fifth.
Blanc and Giovanna Chiara were neck-and-neck in the 400 meter race, finishing in second and third place respectfully. Freshman runner Sadie Crompton completed the race in seventh place for the Dinos.
In the long jump event, Ohlwiler completed a 16’11” jump which earned her second place honors.
Carbon high jumpers had a good turnout at the home meet. Abbie Powell finished in fifth place and Monson in seventh. Monson’s 4’11” jump qualified her for the state finals.
Annika Hansen threw 28’7″ in the shot put competition, finishing in eighth place. In the javelin event, Jaylie Jensen placed third with a 98’7″ throw and Taylor Oliver finished in seventh place with her throw of 94’5″.
As the track and field season draws near the end, coach Jewkes is excited for the team’s future.
“We have a lot of young talent, mainly freshman and sophomores who continue to do well but make constant progress,” he said. “I’m excited for the rest of this season and look forward to next year as well.”
Carbon will compete in Emery on Tuesday. Jewkes feels that several individuals will post state qualifying times at this event. The team will then travel to San Juan next week.
