Looking to go into the state tournament on a high note, the Helper American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from the visiting Uintah team Tuesday. Helper outscored Uintah 15-7.
Wanting to get all his pitchers some work before the weekend tournament, Helper American Legion Manager Jeff Cisneros used three pitchers in game one. Mitch Olson started in the game and allowed one run in three innings. Helper got out in front of Uintah in the second inning 2-1 after three singles by Jarod Lessar, Dillon Wilstead and Olson. Dominic Rondinelli scored the go-ahead run in the fifth after being hit by a pitch and scoring on a passed ball. Lessar pitched innings 4-6 and gave up a run despite earning the win. Ridge Nielson pitched a scoreless seventh. Helper stranded a total of 10 base runners in the game.
Kyler Nelson started game two, scattering three hits and one run over three innings. Cole Fossat came on in relief and, according to Cisneros, struggled to find the strike zone. Fossat walked three batters and gave up two hits in Uintah’s four-run fourth. Fossat did not allow another run over the next two innings. Bryce Blackburn finished off the seventh without a blemish. Helper was held scoreless in the first four innings, but found its stride in the fifth, sending 15 batters to the plate en route to nine runs, claiming a 9-4 lead. Fossat doubled and singled in the inning. Marco Mota also doubled and Chase Morgan, Nelson and Rondinelli chipped in singles. Helper added another run in the sixth to cap off the scoring.
