Press Release
Chris Schulte is a frequently spotlighted athlete and author in the Rock and Ice Climbing Magazine for his amazing feats in the sport of bouldering. There are not many people on earth who have the climbing resume that Chris has built, having conquered some of the most difficult boulder problems around the world.
Schulte began climbing at age 17 in Durango because he was blown away that a boy on his mountain-bike team was doing pull-ups off one finger of each arm.
“The first bouldering trip away from my hometown was to Little Cottonwood Canyon and Joe’s Valley, and I climbed a good handful of V9s and V10s,” Schulte said. “I think that was about 1999. After that, I was pretty much a boulderer. Travel was so nice; I could go and see these great places I might not have seen otherwise, and bouldering was a good way to do it, since you kind of sit in place a bit, walk a bit, rest a bit. It’s a nice way to get to know an area. Travel motivated me a lot; I wanted to be able to climb the amazing lines I saw.”
Schulte, in person, is not what you might expect after seeing photos of him with veins popping out all over his bulging biceps, shaven of head and scowling with focus. He is smiling, loose-limbed and generous, quick to laugh and to answer a question thoughtfully.
Because of his accomplishments, Schulte is sponsored by many large retailers such as Black Diamond Equipment and Five Ten Footwear. Chris is another athlete we are thrilled to see coming to the Joe’s Valley Fest this year!
Don’t forget there is FREE fun for all of the locals at the Fest! The Cowboy Games, Movie Screening, Family and Youth Climbing Clinics, Climber Games (including crate stacking and the salmon ladder) you can also participate in, and a chance to meet Chris and the other pro athletes that are coming! There will also be live music Friday and Saturday night and Ghost Tours that are being put on by the EHS Drama Team ($5 each)!
The goal of the festival is to let the locals experience climbing and let the climbers experience our way of life as well! You can find the full schedule and more at www.joesvalleyfest.com.
