The Richfield Wildcats scored on the opening play of the first and second half to deflate the Carbon Dinos Friday night, a game the Dinos lost 28-14.
After a Carbon punt on its opening drive, Richfield quarterback Matthew Griffin kept the ball and ran it in from 51 yards out on the team’s first play from the scrimmage. The Wildcats made it 14-0 on an Evan Jerome five-yard rushing TD at the 4:35 mark of the second quarter.
Carbon responded with a drive of over four minutes and scored just before the half on a quarterback keeper from Taylor Rasmussen from a yard out.
Richfield made it 22-8 on the first play of the second half as Griffin found Jerome on a swing pass and ran 63 yards to paydirt.
The Dinos made it a one-possession game halfway through the third quarter when Rasmussen again kept the ball and ran it in from 27 yards. With momentum on its side, Carbon then recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. A promising drive was cut short, though, as Rasmussen threw an interception to give the ball right back to Richfield. The Wildcats scored with just two seconds remaining in the third quarter to round out the scoring on the night.
Carbon (1-8, 0-4 3A North) has just one game remaining on the season. Union (4-5, 2-2 3A North) will visit Price on Friday, Oct. 23 to conclude the regular season for both teams.
