CCSO Press Release
Over the past couple of weeks, our jail population has grown rapidly and has been in the 60s and 70s. Today (Monday), we are sitting at 82, which includes 20 females and 62 males. 20 of our 82 inmates are finishing up a sentence and the remaining 62 are being held on new charges, court issued warrants, probation and drug court holds. The majority of our new bookings remain constant with Warrants, Drug Court Holds, Probation Violations, Drug/Alcohol related offenses, Domestic Violence and Thefts.
In the last week, the Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with Adult Probation and Parole to extradite one of our wanted subjects from California back to Carbon County. The extradition was completed in just over 24 hours and without any issues. The male fugitive will appear before the Seventh District Court of Carbon County within the next couple of weeks.
Over the last week, we have completed some upgrades to our jail pods, which include new kiosks. These kiosks have been put in each pod and inmates have the opportunity to visit with family and friends over the kiosks between the hours of 6:00 and 10:00 in the morning and between 5:00 and 9:00 in the evening. Lt. Justin Sherman, Carbon County IT and the Carbon County Jail staff have worked hard implementing the new kiosks. Internet visiting is a huge upgrade right now, not only for the inmate but also for their family and legal counsel. If the weather is bad and a family member does not want to travel on bad roads, they can log into the system and visit with their incarcerated family member or friend over a computer, tablet or smart phone.
With the new kiosks, the inmates will also be able to file medical requests, inmate requests, grievances and even order commissary, including food, hygiene products and music for their MP3 players if they choose. The inmates will also be able to send and receive emails on the kiosk. We have also added a new kiosk in the lobby that will allow friends and family to put money on an inmate’s account without having to bring in a money order.
Carbon County is still being hit hard with telephone and mail scams. Over the past couple of weeks, the main scam has been mail related. A local resident may receive a large envelope in the mail advising that they have been selected as a secret shopper for Walmart. A money order (fake) is included inside the envelope. The sender asks the recipient to go to Walmart, purchase a certain amount of merchandise and then pay for the merchandise using the money order. The subject is then asked to send some money back to an account and then they can keep the remainder of the money. Walmart has been contacted regarding this information and stress that this is a scam and they do not have any secret shopper programs that match this type of description.
We truly live in a great and supportive community. The residents of Carbon County are loyal, trusting and giving and we believe this is one reason we are targeted victims as we are always ready to help without any questions.
We all need to realize that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you are concerned that you may be a target of a scam, please do not hesitate to contact us night or day.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all of the local agencies that help us every day including Price City, Helper, East Carbon, Wellington, Adult Probation and Parole, Utah Highway Patrol, DWR, USU Eastern and all of the first responders in our community. We would also like to thank Price Dispatch and all of their dispatchers for their dedication, professionalism and ability to help people in crisis while getting law enforcement all the information we need prior to our arrival on scene.
Have a great week, Carbon County. Be safe and if you see anything suspicious, please report it.
