The Carbon High School Vocal Jazz was recently seen throughout the community taking part in its annual singing Valentines event. The jazz group sang “Hey Baby” and an arrangement of “Lucky” that was done by former vocal jazz member Jake Carpenter.
Students and teachers paid a small fee to have the group sing to anyone of their choice, whether it was at Carbon High or in the community.
Vocal jazz is getting ready for region choir competitions, but singing Valentines provided a way for vocal jazz to raise money that will be used for purchasing music and other choral needs. Also, this annual event provides an opportunity for vocal jazz students to spend time in the community serving others. The group also uses this experience as a way to encourage younger students to join choir while making memorable experiences.
“The reactions of those being sung to are priceless. Some are happy and some are embarrassed,” said choir director Arthella Williams. “They all feel special that somebody bought them a singing Valentine.”
