Cleveland Town citizens hosted a special meeting Wednesday to discuss preventing a post office closure.

Retired postmaster Colleen Hanson said, “We as a community must be united!”

Town Attorney Shan Clifford said he would compose a letter to try to persuade the government to exclude Cleveland’s post office from the planned 2800 nationwide closures.

Clifford also encouraged citizens to contact their government representatives and support the local post office by utilizing its services whenever possible.

Citizens discussed possible alternatives if the Cleveland post office, which has not received a closure notice, is closed. Options included a joint post office with Elmo, installing cluster boxes and bidding on village offices.

One citizen said, “We count on our post office, we need our post office and we won’t accept any other option.”
