Carbon did well at the region meet last year, taking third.
After losing several key athletes from last year, Carbon is hoping not to skip a beat in the upcoming season. Due to the relatively young group, head coach Jimmy Jewkes is declaring his team “sleepers” in region.
“Because of the athletes we lost, people won’t see us coming,” he said. “It’s going to be really fun to see where we are at.”
The late snowfall has hindered Carbon’s chances to practice outdoors before its upcoming meet. “It took us two weeks to get the snow off our track. We had two feet of standing snow,” said Jewkes. Many athletes will have their first go at certain events at the 2019 Red Rocks Invitational in Moab this coming weekend.
Defending champion Juab remains the team to beat in region, but the goal for this Carbon track and field team is to have both the boys and girls win region. After talking to coach Jewkes about his team and players, it was hard not to be excited about the new season. His own excitement is contagious. He rattled off player by player throughout various events stating that many of them will be in contention of taking state as individuals. The Dinos are looking to make a run as a team as well.
“We are top 10 in almost any event,” he said. “I’m excited about the talent we have. We will see how things go on Saturday.”
