The Carbon baseball team headed to Stansbury this weekend as the third seed in the first round of the state baseball tournament. They emerged top dog after taking out both Juan Diego and Dixie on Saturday.
The first game was a tight contest with Carbon emerging with the 7-6 victory. Derek Young came on in relief to secure the win. Dixie was riding high after toppling the first seed, Stansbury, but was no match as the Dinos put them down 5-0 in the afternoon game. Again, Coach Troy Moynier credited Young with getting the job done as the closer on the mound.
“It was a great team effort,” Moynier said. “I am proud of all these boys. They made some spectaclar plays, diving catches and solid defense to beat two very good teams.”
He went on to say, “Derek Young was pretty oustanding. He came on against Stansbury with a runner on and struck out two to get us out of the inning. He came in against Dixie and pitched another two solid innings. He stepped up as a senior and showed leadership.”
The Dinos will play Desert Hills on Thursday at 11 a.m. at UVU. Moynier says they are in familiar territory now and he is feeling good about the chances of the team to advance deep into the tournament.
