While visiting Canyon View High School last Wednesday, members of Carbon High’s choir and band program participated in the regional solo & ensemble event.

The event allows high school students the opportunity to prepare musical numbers as solos or small groups (known as ensembles) in vocal, instrumental and piano categories. Students compete with other musicians from around the region and are awarded a score based off of technique, posture and other musical criteria.

“We had more solo and ensemble entries compete at region than any other school,” expressed CHS choir teacher Arthella Williams. CHS had more than 20 students qualify for the state competition, which will be held April 30 at Orem High School.

Sadie Crompton and Sophia Fulcher each qualified with flute solos and Shanon Baker as well as Sarah Ohlwiler each qualified with their clarinet solos.

Isabelle Ceniceros and Andrew Williams also qualified with mallet solos. Fulcher also qualified for state along with Noah Parker with their mallet duet. Carbon High’s advanced percussion class qualified as well.

Britlie Sharp, Elley Cowdell, Vanessa Snow, Vivian Bake and Jewelianna Nielson all qualified for the state competition with piano solos.

Kody Wells, Mckenna Sorenson, Ohlwiler, Kaden Earl, Natalia Hopes, Marylou Olsen, Grace Mantz and Gabe VanDyke as well as a mixed vocal ensemble and chamber choir, featuring members of Carbon High’s vocal jazz, also all qualified for the next round of the competition.

The students will spend the next month perfecting their numbers before the state competition in April.
