Cole Fossat and Jarod Lessar spurred the Carbon Dinos to a road win over the Richfield Wildcats 5-4 in nine innings.
Fossat went six solid innings, during which he struck out 12. He also homered on the first pitch he saw in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at four, which ultimately sent the game into extra innings. Lessar pitched the final three innings for the Dinos, giving up just one hits while striking out six.
Carbon scored three runs in the third behind three walks and hits by Alex Ruiz, Fossat and Dillon Lowes. The Wildcats tied things up at three in the third and a home run in the fourth gave them their first and only lead of the game at 4-3.
Kaiden Lewis doubled to begin the ninth inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Chase Morgan knocked in Lewis on a fielder’s choice to take the lead. Lessar shut the door on Richfield in the bottom of the frame to secure the win.
“We found a way to win a game in which we did not hit very well,” Coach Jeff Cisneros said. “I was proud of the way we battled all day and eventually found a way to win our first region game of the year.”
The Dinos (5-7, 1-0 Region 12) host the Wildcats on Thursday at Ernie Gardner Field in Helper at 3:30 p.m.
