ABAJO MOUNTAINS: (October 18) Sergeant J. Shirley reports that fall fishing is picking up in San Juan County. Anglers should have good fishing at any water. Monticello Lake and Foy Reservoir have a lot of moss, so it’s easier to catch fish with surface baits. Using a bubble with a marshmallow or PowerBait is working well too. The water level at Lloyds Lake is very low. You can easily catch fish from the bank. Anglers should catch some decent-sized fish before the lake freezes. Blanding 3 and 4 have good fishing. Anglers who want to catch a big tiger trout should fish Blanding 4 during the next month using a lure, jig or nightcrawler. Rainbow trout fishing is good at Blanding waters with PowerBait and marshmallows.
BENCHES POND: (October 18) Fishing is good. Todd Munford recommends fishing with nightcrawlers tipped with marshmallows, or rainbow sparkle PowerBait. He found good fishing for 10- to 12-inch rainbow trout.
BOULGER RESERVOIR: (October 18) Fishing is good. Try fishing with nightcrawlers tipped with marshmallows, or rainbow sparkle PowerBait.
CARBON COUNTY COMMUNITY FISHING POND: (October 18) Carbon County Fairground personnel report that one angler caught and released 75 fish in three hours. Other anglers seem to leave with their limit of two fish every day. Anglers have been using lures as well as nightcrawlers.
DUCK FORK RESERVOIR: (October 12) On Oct. 10, Tom Ogden fly fished from a float tube with fast-sinking line and various wooly buggers and soft hackle flies in sizes 6 to 8. The best colors were black, green and pearl or black, red and blue. Tom caught six tiger trout and 29 cutthroat trout, which ranged in size from seven to 16 inches. He caught most of the fish near the bottom in 12 to 20 feet of water.
ELECTRIC LAKE: (October 18) On Oct. 11, fisheries biologists sampled the fish population from nets. They found good numbers of cutthroat and tiger trout as long as 17 and 19 inches respectively. While biologists were pulling fish from nets, one Fairview angler, Mr. Swenson, caught a 4-pound cutthroat trout in the lake. Shoreline and boat anglers report good fishing using dead redside shiners as bait. Tom Ogden fly fished on Oct. 15 from a kick boat. He reported good fishing with fast sinking line and sizes 6 to 8 soft hackle flies in black and green, tan and brown, green tinsel, or black. He caught fish ranging in size from 8 to 19 inches long. On Oct. 13, Todd Munford reported good fishing from a boat in 16 to 20 feet of water. He was trolling a straight nightcrawler or redside shiner on monofilament. From the shore, Munford suggests fishing near the boat ramp with a nightcrawler tipped with a salmon egg or redside shiner and trailing a full bubble and 24 inches of leader. Aquatics Biologist Mike Bolinski reports good fishing with chub meat.
HUNTINGTON NORTH RESERVOIR: (October 4) Ken Santoro reports slow fishing for wipers. He caught some rainbow trout on nightcrawlers. Spoons, jigs, top water plugs and diving crankbaits have not been effective for wipers.
HUNTINGTON RESERVOIR: (October 18) Todd Munford reported some of the best fishing of the year on Oct. 12. He said that shore fishing was best with a full bubble with 24 to 30 inches of leader and half a nightcrawler threaded through the hook to the eye. He suggested that fly anglers use a tube or pontoon and slow troll in the middle of the reservoir with sinking line and rust-colored crystal buggers or San Juan worms. His caught tiger trout in the 11- to 18-inch range, with an occasional 20-inch fish.
SCOFIELD RESERVOIR: (October 18) Rob Bona of Springville caught a 16.5-pound brown trout on Oct. 6. During a, Oct. 4 gillnetting survey, DWR biologists captured a number of large tiger trout — some as heavy as eight pounds. Conservation Officer Devin Christensen recommends fishing chub meat on a tube jig. Todd Munford reports good success with dead redside shiner minnows or nightcrawlers tipped with chartreuse-colored marshmallows. Rainbow-sparkle PowerBait seems to outperform the other colors.
