The USU Eastern men’s basketball team moved to 17-10 overall and 9-8 in conference play on Saturday as they played the final regular season home game. taking an 82-58 win over the College of Southern Nevada. Kurt Wegscheider scored 15 to lead the Eagles in the big conference win.
The first half of the game was owned by the Coyotes, and John Jenkins in particular, who scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half, pushing his team and putting the Coyotes up by two at halftime.
After the break, the Eagles came alive offensively as they scored 52 on 60% shooting in the half. Dillon Sorenson put up all of his 12 points and Payton Falslev eight of his 14 as USU Eastern slowly built its lead throughout the quarter, pushing it to as high as 25 with 1:28 left.
Nick Attanasio scored a game high 17 and Terrance Marigney six for Southern Nevada in a game that as a team the Coyotes shot 42.3% from the field. For the Eagles, it was a great shooting night as they went 33-66 from the field, 11-19 from behind the arc and ended with 71.4% from the charity stripe.
USU Eastern has just one regular season game left, Tuesday on the road in Rangely, Colo., as they take on Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC). This is the third time these teams have faced off this season with the teams splitting the first two, each winning on each other’s home floor. CNCC took the first meeting on Dec. 18 in the BDAC 79-76. USU Eastern then returned the favor on Jan. 6 in Rangely, 76-57.
After Tuesday’s game, the Eagles will be off until Feb. 24 when they will travel to Salt Lake Community College for the conference tournament. That round of the playoffs will end on Saturday, Feb. 26 when a conference winner will be crowned.
