Dennis Ardohain of the Miners Memorial Committee approached the Huntington City Council Wednesday evening to ask for support financial support for a miners memorial to be constructed in Emery County.
The idea of a memorial began with Ardohain and Frank Markosek, who have spent more than eighty years combined working in coal mines and have seen many coal mining disasters throughout the years. A committee was formed to raise funds, research fallen miners, design a monument and oversee the project to completion.
The project began approximately 16 months ago with plans to construct the main miners memorial in Price with satellite locations in Scofield, Helper, East Carbon and Castle Dale. However, as calls came in from families of fallen miners in Emery County, the committee made the decision to construct a second memorial in Castle Dale with satellite locations in Scofield, Helper and East Carbon.
A miners memorial will be constructed and placed in front of the Emery County Courthouse on Main Street in Castle Dale, similar to the Wilberg Monument. It will have two bronze plaques, a dedication plate, a name plate listing all the miners’ names and a donor’s plate listing all the donors’ names.
A miners memorial fundraiser dinner will be hosted on May 14 at the Carbon County Event Center at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, a golf tournament will take place at the Carbon Country Club on May 15 at 12 p.m.
