With the red rocks of Grand County as a backdrop, both the Emery High Boys’ and Girls’ Track Teams brought home second-place finishes from the Region 15 Championships hosted last week.
The Lady Spartans put up points for the Black and Gold early, placing fourth in the sprint medley relay while the boys’ team put up third.
Erin Hurst put up a strong first in the 3200 meters while Chase Christiansen, Ty Funk and McKay Meccariello represented in the boys’ contest placing second, third and sixth.
Emery girls placed third in the 4×100 while the boys grabbed fifth in the same contest. Tiana Jensen placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with Daryl Guymon placing second in the boys’ 110 meter hurdles. Teammate Mason Faimalo finished sixth as well.
Jocee Funk placed fourth in the girls’ 100 meters while Makieya Bertuzzi managed sixth. Emery dominated in the boys’ 100 meters, with Braiden Ivie and Logan Cox finishing first and second, respectively.
Erin Hurst continued to score for the Spartans, finishing sixth in the 800 meters. Ty Funk and Keldan Guymon placed third and fifth in the boys’ 800 meters as well. Tayden Nielson placed fifth in the girls’ 400 meters.
Cox returned in the 400 meters to place first with Brady Boren taking fourth. Tiana Jensen grabbed sixth in the 300 meters. Daryl Guymon finished first in the boys’ 300 meters while Faimalo placed fifth.
Freshman Ivie returned in the 200 meters, beating out San Juan’s Senior Nathan Nielson for first. Jocee Funk placed sixth in the girls’ 200 meters as well. Erin Hurst returned in the 1600 to take second.
Christiansen managed third in the boys’ 1600 meters with Griffin Livingston taking fifth for Emery as well. The Lady Spartans brought home second in the 4×400 with the boys’ team taking third in the same contest.
Alejandra Garcia and Chloe Sermon took fourth and sixth in the girls’ high jump while Ty Mecham and Chase Jewkes took second and sixth in the boys’ shot put. Jewkes also ended with second in the boys’ javelin.
Emery swept the girls’ javelin competition, with four Lady Spartans notching points for the Black and Gold. Sam Morgan, Emalee Bott, Mckenzie Cox and Elexis Dalton took second, third, fourth and sixth in the discus final.
Faimalo also placed sixth in the high jump while Katelyn Hurst placed third in the girls’ long jump. Morgan took second in the javelin while Bertuzzi also grabbed fifth. Brileigh Curtis scored in the shot put, taking fifth as well as Dalton who took sixth.
Marquies Giroux continued Spartan scoring, taking fifth in the boys’ discus.
