Emery High hosted the Darrell Gardner Invitational track meet on Tuesday. Athletes from Carbon, Emery, Pinnacle and Green River competed in the event.
At the competition, Emery showed exceptional skills on their home field. The girls and boys teams both finished the day in third. Sophomore Erin Hurst grabbed second place in the 3200 with a time of 12:24.01, barely falling behind a Richfield runner that had two seconds on top of Hurt. Junior Alex Stilson earned eighth place for the boy’s 3200 while freshman Lane Taylor finished in 10th.
Ashlynn Allred took first in the 100 meter with a time of 12.56 and Hanna Dyer grabbed 10th for Emery. Camry Johnson and Allyson Woolsey competed in the 400 meter race and took fourth and fifth, respectively. Matt Mecham earned fifth for the boys in the 400 and freshman Logan Cox finished in sixth.
Emery also had a good showing in the 1600 with Ashley Guymon in sixth and Hannah Seely in seventh for the girls. Jaxon Bradley grabbed fifth place for the boys.
Paytn Jeffs earned first in the girls high jump for Emery with a jump of 5’1″.
Carbon made an excellent showing at the invitational with the girls finishing in second behind Richfield. The boys finished with a respectable seventh place out of thirteen teams.
The Dinos swept the board in the girls high jump competition. Abbie Powell finished in second with a jump of 5’1′. Giovanna Chiara completed a personal best jump of 4’11” to place fourth, while Lexi Monson finished fifth, Shelby Cornforth in seventh and Morgan Hillam and Jayde Moynier tied for eighth.
According to Carbon High coach Jimmy Jewkes, the girls high jump team is turning heads. “We have seven girls who have qualified for the upcoming BYU meet in high jump,” he explained. “Qualifying that many girls in this event is unheard of at Carbon.”
Freshman Sarah Ohlwiler grabbed second place in the long jump with a jump of 16’06.25″. Coach Jewkes feels that Ohlwiler has a good chance of breaking the state record, which currently sits at 17’9″.
Garrett Marsing qualified for state in the 800 meter by posting a time of 1:59.
The team of Cache and Kyle Barrett, Dallin Quinton and Braxton Jones finished the 4×100 relay in third place with a time of 46.57 seconds.
Green River also competed in the invitational with athletes in various events. Tay Johnson earned third place in the girls 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.74 seconds. She also placed fourth in the long jump event with a jump of 15’10”.
Joe Serafin grabbed sixth place in the boys 100 meter with a time of 11.78 seconds. Sophomore Cassidee Moore did well in the 1600, finished in fourth in 6:15.86.
Tyrell Shumway smashed the boys javelin competition with a throw of 164’07” to secure first place for Green River. Corbin Mecham placed seventh in shot put with a throw of 39’02”.
Finally, Pinnacle Canyon Academy had many competitors at the track meet. Wyatt Howard competed in the 400 meter and Hunter Sherman grabbed eighth place in the boys 200.
Raycee Birch, Nyet Rasmussen and Courtney Hunter raced in the 100 meter hurdles for Pinnacle and Sherman finished in 10th for the boys with a time of 19.77 seconds.
Cody Dean Sanchez represented Pinnacle in the discus and long jump competitions. Sanchez finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 37’01”. Valentina Motte competed for the girls in discus.
