The Emery County School Board met on Wednesday evening to discuss a number of topics for the upcoming school year.
First, board members briefly discussed grants. Currently, a letter of support has been sent for the YouthBuild grant, which is from the Department of Labor and is a sizable amount of money with the minimal being $700,000. It would provide apprenticeship for students enrolled in pathways. There are less than 50 nationally and there is already one in Utah. However, it was remarked that how it is being laid out means that it could be successful for the Emery School District (ESD).
As of now, the window has closed on the Talent Ready grant but will likely open again in November. The ESD has applied in the past without success and the amount going for grant opportunities is declining while the number of those interested is increasing.
Superintendent Larry Davis remarked that they are always looking to those types of opportunities. Available in the district are more than 50 grants that are in place and collecting money. Most of those are renewable every year.
A brief discussion was also had on the possibility of new buildings within the district. The plans are still in the beginning stages with a bit of groundwork started. The school district is working to begin a representative committee currently and the intention is to make headway this fall with a solid plan in place to move on in the new year.
The board also discussed topics such as the approval of revised policy JQ-E fee schedules, approving to renew them for the upcoming year.
