Food for Thought: Darling Clementines

By Patti Rigby, Carbon School District Child Nutritional Director

Clementines and tangerines are from the mandarin family. In order to provide seedless fruit, the clementine branches must be grafted with a specific variety because clementine plants are sterile. The fruit is low in calories but very high in vitamin C, providing more than 50% of the daily recommendation for children.

Because they don’t have seeds and are easy to peel, they are a perfect healthy snack for kids! That’s why we love serving them and kids love to see them as a part of their balanced school lunch.
