By Patti Rigby – Carbon School District Child Nutrition Director
For the first year ever, Carbon School District is offering free breakfast to all students K-12 under a trial program. This is possible in our area due to extra money we earned by having our menus reviewed by the Utah State Office of Education Child Nutrition Department.
We adopted the new menu requirements at the beginning of a transition period, so we were granted an additional $.06 reimbursement per meal by the federal government. Last school year alone, we served 323,563 lunches. These new regulations were part of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.
Additionally, federal reimbursement was increased when our county was deemed a “Severe Need Area” for a breakfast program based on our high use of free and reduced-price lunches.
We hope all families will take advantage of this great benefit.
