Makayla Clark went 2-3, sparking the Spartans to a 6-2 victory in seven innings over Gunnison on Friday at Spanish Fork Complex.

She doubled in the second inning and singled in the sixth inning.

The Spartans relied on Taylor Payne to eat up innings en route to the win. Payne allowed one earned run, five hits and three walks while striking out two over seven innings of work.

Sorenson couldn’t get it done in the circle for Gunnison, taking a loss. She allowed six runs in six innings, walked none and struck out four.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They caught fire after Gentry Noyes doubled. Then, Haylee Beckstead singled, scoring Jacie Huntington.

The lead stayed with the Spartans after the second, when they scored five runs on a two-run home run by Ashton Bell and a two-run single by Beckstead.

After pushing across one run in the top of the sixth, Gunnison faced just a 6-2 deficit. An RBI single by Miner gave Gunnison life. But, Payne got Christensen to fly out to end the inning.
