Helper American Legion Advances to State Championship Game

After securing a 4-3 win over the Trappers Orange team Wednesday night, the Helper American Legion baseball squad advances to the state championship game.

Helper sealed the victory in nine innings following competitive play throughout the game. Going into the eighth inning, the teams were tied 3-3.

An unusual play in the ninth sealed the win for Helper. Marco Mota stepped up to bat for Helper, causing a pop fly ball to the catcher. According to Helper manager Jeff Cisneros, the catcher did not leave the box, allowing Helper to capitalize on the mistake. “Cole Fossat was on second and I was able to send him home to cinch the win,” Cisneros explained. “This was a fun game and both teams played excellent defense.”

Helper will play in the championship game Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Logan High School. They will face the winner of the St. George versus Trapper Orange game, which will take place Thursday afternoon.

Because the state tournament is double elimination, Helper only needs to win once against either team to claim the state title. Both St. George and the Trappers need to defeat Helper twice in order to upset the defending state champions. If necessary, the second game will take place immediately following the 7 p.m. match up.
