The Lady Dinos pulled off a huge 33-31 win over third ranked Juan Diego Soaring Eagle Friday night. With the win, Carbon will advance to the next round of the playoffs in Cedar City next week.
Trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half of play, Carbon clawed their way back into the game. With a steal and a bucket with less than 45 seconds to play, the Dinos pulled into the lead by one.
Coach Ted Bianco called a strategic time out as Juan Diego went to the line with 7.7 seconds left. With two misses by the Soaring Eagle, Carbon pulled in the rebound and Lindsey Blanc went to the line and split her shots to give Carbon the two point lead.
Shelby Cornforth led the Dinos with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Morgan Hillam came off the bench early to score Carbon’s first six points of the game. She finished with 11 points and pulled down eight boards. Blanc added three points and five rebounds while Jordan Scoggins contributed five points in the upset win.
“I thought all the girls showed up to play and even though we got down by as many as 10, we never gave up,'” said Bianco. “We kept the pressure on them all night and got key rebounds and did not give them second shots.”
“If we can continue to play like this, we can go down to Cedar City and make some noise,” Bianco added.
Carbon will face Cedar City at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The game will be televised live on ETV News Channnel 10.
