Things didn’t look great for the Carbon Lady Dinos for the first 29 minutes of their game with the Pine View Panthers Saturday night. Head coach Ted Bianco then deployed a full-court press defense that confounded the Panthers and spurred the Lady Dinos into the 3A quarterfinals with a come-from-behind victory, 50-48.
Carbon did just enough in the opening quarter to lead by one, 12-11. Jordan Scoggins got Carbon its first lead of the game, 8-7, on a runner at the 1:50 mark of the period.
A back-and-forth second quarter saw both teams lead on multiple occasions and would end with a lead for Pine View, 25-22.
After a 4-0 run by the Panthers to begin the second half, Morgan Hillam and Taylor Oliver brought Carbon back to tie the score at 32 at the four-minute mark. Pine View responded with its own run and increased its lead to seven, 41-34 after a three pointer at the 2:30 mark. Lindsey Blanc hit two free throws with under a minute left to bring the Lady Dinos a bit closer with just one quarter remaining.
Carbon chipped away at the Pine View lead early in the fourth to get the score to 43-40, but a 5-0 run by the Panthers extended the lead to 48-40 with 3:40 to go. Shortly thereafter is when Bianco released his press defense, forcing multiple turnovers on which the Lady Dinos capitalized. Carbon ended the game on a 10-0 run to escape with the victory.
Blanc led Carbon with 13 points. Hillam picked a good night to score a career-high 12. Scoggins was the other Lady Dino in double figures with 11. Oliver and Beth Child each chipped in seven apiece.
With the win, Carbon advances to play Stansbury at 4:10 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City. Stansbury beat Uintah on a buzzer beater on Saturday for the opportunity to take on the Lady Dinos.
The game can be watched live on ETV Channel 10 at 4:10 p.m. Thursday.
