Carbon’s last regular season game took place in Richfield on Wednesday night. The Lady Wildcats were sitting in second place in region and in fourth in 3A while the Lady Dinos were sitting toward the bottom of the region standings.
The Lady Dinos came ready to play and punched Richfield in the mouth with a first set win, 25-20. Richfield answered back, taking the second set 25-17 to tie it at a set apiece.
Both teams fought hard, looking to go up 2-1 in the third set. There were many back and forth points and lead changes in the pivotal set. The Lady Dinos worked hard to hold a 25-24 set point when Katie Jones made a huge dig to keep the point alive. Gracie Salas then finished off the rally with a spike to make it 26-24. Carbon grabbed the third set for a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth set was also close with both teams trading points. Carbon was able to separate itself late, however, and sealed the 25-20 victory with Cora Lamborn’s kill. The Dinos pulled off the 3-1 upset on Richfield’s home court.
It was truly a team victory as five different Dinos had over five kills. Leading that group was Emma Christensen with nine. Diana Morley was a force on the net, recording a team-high eight blocks, accounting for nearly half of the team’s blocks. There were also five Dinos that logged double-digit digs on the night. Katie Jones led the effort with 17 followed by Makenna Blanc with 13, Abbie Saccamanno with 11, and Emma Christensen and Gracie Salas with 10 each. Blanc also facilitated the offense with 29 assists.
Carbon has won its last seven games and gained some momentum heading into the state tournament, which begins on Saturday.
