Carbon School District Press Release
Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc across south Texas in September, destroying everything from businesses to homes to schools. The Kiwanis Club of Price teamed up with students from Carbon School District to give some of the second grade children there, many who have lost their schools and homes, just a little respite.
The Kiwanis Club provided a gift card to McDonald’s for 100 second grade students in the Houston School District. The program also had the students write letters to their counterparts in south Texas and enclosed was a return envelope so the kids from Houston could send back a thanks if they wished.
“At first, it was hard for us and the district to get in touch with anyone down there to work this out,” said Richard Tatton of the local Kiwanis Club. “I guess they were so busy with trying to get school going and find places for students to have classes that they were just doing what they could. So, we got ahold of Senator Lee’s office and asked them for their help in getting in touch.”
The gift cards were for $10 each and the letters that went with them were very interesting, according to Tatton.
“They were just cute and fun to read,” said Tatton. “The letters were sent off about a month ago.”
District personnel said they have not heard anything back yet, and that the people they are working with in the Houston School District are still so busy just keeping schools going that contact has been minimal.
The letters were distributed and any thank you notes that come back will be routed through the district office to maintain privacy on both ends for the students writing to each other.
